The New York Times reported this week that a massive number of Americans are seeking to buy Ukraine flags in order to express support and solidarity with the people of Ukraine, following aggression from Russia. At the moment, many Ukrainian flags on Amazon and at other retailers are on backorder, or may take weeks to arrive. Companies are reportedly scrambling to keep up with the demand.
If you can’t purchase a Ukrainian flag to show your support for the country, you can always make your own at home. Making your own Ukrainian flag is also a great activity to do with kids, as you introduce them (gently) to the concept of what’s happening in that part of the world, and the idea of expressing support for other people. If you make your own DIY Ukraine flag, you can also save the money you would have spent purchasing one, and donate it to relief efforts instead.
Making a DIY Ukraine Flag at Home
The good news is that Ukraine’s flag has a relatively simple design. It’s essentially a large blue stripe above a large yellow one. That makes the flag relatively simple to recreate using fabric, or even construction paper.
I made a DIY Ukraine flag at home. Here’s the items I used:
- Yellow Crayola construction paper
- Blue Crayola construction paper
- Skewer, dowel or chopstick
Here’s the exact process I followed:
If you make one of these flags using fabric, the process would be fairly similar. Instead of gluing the piece together, you can sew them or use a fabric adhesive to connect them. A larger fabric flag is something you could display in your yard. This flag, made from construction paper, is perfect to display in a home or car window, though.
Until more commercially made flags are available, go ahead and try your hand at creating your own. You can donate to the UN relief fund for the conflict here.
