Demo of Using Nest Learning Thermostat Without Wifi

In this blog post, we’ll discuss how to use the Nest Learning Thermostat without a Wi-Fi connection.

This may be necessary if your Wi-Fi goes down or if you’re in a space that doesn’t have Wi-Fi, such as a remote house or cabin.

Basic Functionality

The good news is that the Nest Learning Thermostat can still operate even without Wi-Fi. You can still go into the settings to see the current temperature setting, and you can still switch modes to make it a bit warmer.

Even if your Wifi is out because of a power outage, the thermostat should remain on battery power for a bit.

Limitations of Wi-Fi-Free Usage

However, there are some limitations when using the Nest Learning Thermostat without Wi-Fi. It cannot be activated remotely, so you cannot use the app to control it or operate it from a remote location.

You also won’t get any of the outdoor temperature readings, as this requires a Wi-Fi connection.

You can still adjust the temperature without Wifi

You can still make edits to the schedule manually, but it will need to update itself periodically. To do this, it is ideal to connect the thermostat to Wi-Fi from time to time, such as using the hotspot from your phone.

Conclusion

Even without Wi-Fi, the Nest Learning Thermostat is still a functional and good-looking thermostat. Although many of its smart features won’t work, it can still perform basic operations like setting a schedule and changing your home’s temperature.

Of course, if your Wifi is just out briefly, you’ll get the advanced features back once the outage is resolved.

I’m Tom from Do-It-Yourself Home Automation and this is a look at using the Nest Learning Thermostat without WiFi. You might need to do this if your WiFi goes down or if you’re in a space that doesn’t have WiFi, like a remote house or a cabin. The good news is that the Nest Learning Thermostat can still operate even if you don’t have WiFi.

Right now, you can go into Settings and see it says Internet Disconnected, but it’s still able to operate. I’ve got my current temperature setting and I can still switch modes. So, if I want it to be a little bit warmer in here, I can switch to Heat and you can see it’s still going to operate.

What it cannot do is be activated remotely. Obviously, if you don’t have WiFi, you can’t use the app to control it and you can’t operate it from a remote location. Also, it will need to update itself periodically, and to update your schedule. You can still go in and make edits to the schedule manually if you want to do that, but obviously you can’t use it in the app if you don’t have a WiFi connection.

It will need to update itself periodically, so you do want to ideally be able to connect it to WiFi to do that. However, even if you don’t have WiFi, again, it’s still functional and it’s a really nice thermostat. The other thing you won’t get is that you won’t necessarily get any of the outdoor temperature readings. Normally you get an outdoor temperature because it’s connected to the internet, but you’re not going to get that if you don’t have the WiFi.

But you can still, again, do the basic functions. If you found this helpful in any way, thanks for watching!
