Today we’re looking at how to install the LiftMaster 878 Max Wireless Keyless Entry Pad for your LiftMaster garage door opener.
This pad is designed to be installed on the outside of your house, allowing people to enter a code to get into your garage. I installed one for my own garage, and it took about 15 minutes.
Having the keypad is great. Now if I have a guest over, I can give them the code, and they can let themselves into the garage.
Here’s my video showing the installation process.
Step 1: Note the Color of Your Learn Button
The first step is to take a look at the color of the learn button on your particular LiftMaster mode. It’s usually located on the back of the opener itself, on the roof of your garage. This is important to the installation process and will determine the rest of the steps.
Step 2: Install the Pad on the Outside of Your House
The next step is to install the keypad on the outside of your house. This is easy to do – all you need to do is open the battery door and use one screw to attach it to the wall.

Step 3: Synchronize the Keypad with Your LiftMaster Opener
Next, you’ll want to follow the instructions on the keypad to sync it with your door opener. The instructions vary by the color of your learn button.

I used Method B. This involves:
- Pressing and holding * and # on the keypad until the lights stop blinking
- Entering a four digit pin code
- Pressing the # key
- Pressing the Enter button 3 times, since I have a red/orange Learn button. Yellow buttons get one press, purple ones get two, and green ones get four)
- Pressing the 0 Button on the keypad
- Pressing the learn button on the door opener motor (the one we found earlier)
- Entering the pin again and pressing Enter on the keypad until the lights flash
It’s a ton of steps! But by completing them in order, I got my keypad synced up. Take a look at the video above if you want to see the steps in order.
Step 5: Test the Code
To test the code, close the door and enter the PIN code from outside the house. Once you press enter, the door should open.

Step 6: Close the Cover
When you’re not using the pad, it’s nice to cover it. This will protect it from the weather.
To close your garage door from outside, simply press the enter button without entering the PIN code.
And that’s it! That’s how you install the LiftMaster 878 Max Wireless Keyless Entry Pad.

Tom from Do-It-Yourself Home Automation here. This is a look at installing the LiftMaster 878 Max Wireless Keyless Entry Pad for your LiftMaster garage door opener.
This is the LiftMaster pad. You can install this on the outside of your house so that people can enter a code to get into your garage. To synchronize it with your particular LiftMaster, follow the instructions on the back. Look at the color of the learn button on your particular LiftMaster and note it.
I installed the keypad on the outside. All I did was open the battery door and put one screw in. Then I put a second screw into a little hook on the back.
Now, to configure it to work with my particular LiftMaster opener, I followed the instructions. I pressed and held the buttons until the blinking stopped, entered a four digit PIN code, pressed the pound key, and pressed the enter button the number of times it corresponds to the opener type (in my case, three). Then I pressed and released the zero button and pressed the learn button on the garage door opener. I saw the LED light up, entered my PIN code again, and pressed the enter button.
Now, to test it out, I closed the door, entered my PIN code, and pressed enter. Sure enough, the door opened. When you’re not using the keypad, it’s nice to cover it to protect it from the weather. And if you want to close the door from outside, you don’t have to enter your PIN; just press the enter button. And that’s it. That’s how you install the LiftMaster remote keypad.
