I’m Tom from Do-It-Yourself Home Automation and this is a look at getting stock data on the Amazon Echo Show. So I can say things like, “Alexa, what’s the S&P 500 at?” As of 11:13 AM Eastern, the S&P 500 is up over 8 points or 0.26% at 3,285.

So you can see I got a couple of things here. I got a nice display with the current level, the change and percent change, and then this really snazzy graph of the intraday value for that index. And it kind of draws itself as you go.

And you can ask this for other indices as well. So I can say, “Alexa, what’s the Dow Jones Industrial Average at?” As of 11:08 AM Eastern, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up over 134 points or 0.47% at 28,857. So it’ll read you a summary of the trading for the day. And you can get that on an Echo device even if you don’t have a screen.

I just really like the screen kind of display here. It’s almost like a little stock ticker. So those are for indices. You can also get specific stocks. So I can say, “Alexa, what’s ExxonMobil stock at?” As of 11:08 AM Eastern, ExxonMobil traded at 64 US dollars and 67 cents on the New York Stock Exchange, up 0.02% since previous close.

So there you go, a little summary of a specific company. One thing to note is it is delayed like most stock data. So this is showing 11:08 AM data. It’s currently Eastern time. It’s 11:28. So it’s delayed by 20 minutes. Pretty standard in the industry when you’re not paying a fortune for a Bloomberg terminal or something like that.

But kind of a cool way to get an update on the stock market, both for major indices and specific companies, and to get what I think is a really nice graphical layout of those data.
